Moving is stressful, time consuming, and can cost a pretty penny if you’re not careful. In order to lessen these factors, preparation is key.

Start Early

The earlier you begin packing, the more sanity you will have upon moving. Don’t get me wrong, it may not seem like fun to wake up every Saturday and pack 1-2 boxes; however, in the long run you’ll be happy you took the less stressful route. Beginning early allows you to still have your weekends free and make those last memories in your current home enjoyable for years to come.

Declutter

There’s nothing worse than packing items from your storage closet you haven’t touched in 5+ years only to move them to another storage closet where they will sit for another 5+ years. Take this time to go through all your belongings and decide what you will keep, what can be donated, and what just needs to make its way into the dumpster. This gives you a fresh start in your new home!

Label, Label, Label

Maybe you have a pretty good memory of what each box contains, or maybe you have so many things to keep track of you don’t remember what you ate for breakfast. Either way, it’s helpful to clearly label each and every box. Not only will this force you to be more organized when filling the boxes, it will save you from having to explain where each box should be placed during the move and help you quickly find items while unpacking.

Rally the troops

Ask for help! Call up your family and friends to see who can help on the big day–every little bit makes a big difference. Yes, it is helpful to have muscles for all the heavy lifting, but it is also equally as helpful to have someone direct the traffic of boxes, begin to unpack items, or to keep your children / furry friends occupied. Even better, post move you have all your friends and family in one place to help you enjoy your first moments in your new home.
